Oatmeal – A Daily Source of Dietary Fiber

Oatmeal is one of the best high-fiber meals you can eat when you’ve removed your gallbladder.

Once you’ve started eating normally again after surgery (you primarily start with a full liquid diet until you can consume regular meals), you should begin a high-fiber diet to help move food through the intestine.

Oatmeal is in the line of foods generally known as whole grains and as such it naturally contains high amounts of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is essential after a gallbladder removal because it aids in the movement of food in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby preventing bloating, gas, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and even constipation from fatty foods.

When food stays in your system for a long period of time, it tends to create many problems such as:

  • Increased acidity
  • When food is present in the stomach longer than it should be, more acid is secreted in order to digest the food components. As a result of this, delayed emptying contributes directly to acid reflux and hyperacidity.

  • Gas
  • Food that has been digested also produces gas in the stomach and gut leading to abdominal bloating and distension.

  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Other effects of slow food transit time include nausea and vomiting. Since there is slower gastric emptying time, the person may feel very full and may cause nausea and vomiting when the next meal is ingested.

  • Diarrhea
  • Slower motility of the gastrointestinal tract usually leads to constipation in normal individuals, however in patients who have no gallbladder, the presence of acids in the gastrointestinal tract may lead to further irritation of the intestines leading to irritable bowel syndrome which can cause diarrhea.

  • Constipation
  • Since the food stays undigested for long periods of time and nothing is helping it move properly, you may become constipated for a while. This can lead to gas build up and intoxication of the body. Because of this, it is essential to consume oatmeal daily.

Studies have also shown that eating oatmeal as a daily source of fiber can actually help prevent heart disease and fight against diabetes.

However, you should add high-fiber foods to your diet gradually so that the digestive system can have time to adapt going from a liquid diet to a solid diet. Also, it is essential that you control fiber intake during episodes of diarrhea because it can make matters worse. So make sure to control how often you eat oatmeal especially if you’re experiencing looser bowel movements.

Oatmeal should also be included in your diet because it also contains high amounts of energy-producing starch.
